Jimmy started his career in open wheelers, racing in a Historic Reynard RF88 Formula Ford. After spending a year learning, he jumped into the National Formula Ford Series with Listec Race Cars. It was here where Jimmy started turning heads enough to be the first driver signed up to the Australian Formula 4 Championship with AGI Sport.
European opportunities were on the table, but it was ultimately a lack of budget which kept Jimmy in Australia. This turned his focus to sedans, deciding to adapt his craft in a Toyota 86 Production Car.
2017 was arguably the turning point for Jimmy Vernon in the motorsport world. Jimmy joined forces with Bruce Williams Motorsport to contest the Toyota 86 Racing Series, a year that brought great success, landing on the podium 13 out of 14 races, only a mechanical fault standing in the way of a perfect sweep. This run of consistency landed Jimmy the 2017 Australian Championship, a huge feat in a highly competitive category.
2018 saw a shift to GT3 machinery for Jimmy, joining the McElrea Racing team to race the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge. A run of podiums landed Jimmy 4th in the overall championship. During this tenure, Jimmy also raced the Bathurst 6 hour and Bathurst 12 hour multiple times, with a few class podiums along the way.
Jimmy spent 2019 with a brief stint in the TCR Australia Championship, before shifting focus to the American style muscle in the Australian Transam Championship. This kicked off with an overall podium on debut, before COVID put a bump steer on the remainder of that season.
2022 was the first chance Jimmy could step back into the National scene, racing a Mitsubishi Evo X Production car in the Australian Production Car Championship. A clean sweep of round wins cemented his second National title.
In 2023, Jimmy is stepping into the V8 SuperUtes Series. A category that receives amazing coverage to Jimmy, his corporate partners and also the Kids with Cancer Foundation.
